Fota Pollinator Trail – Station 03

Can you see the Bee Lodge?

The Bee lodge is specifically designed by the IBCP and has the purpose of housing Native Irish honeybees Apis mellifera mellifera (also known as black honeybees or brown honeybees).

We have developed these Bee Lodges to provide a habitat for our native black honeybee. For millennia the bee was a feature of the forest and many old trees in our countryside hosted colonies. Due to modern farming practices their natural habitat has almost disappeared.  By providing nesting sites for the bees it will ensure the survival of this bee species for future generations.

There are over 40 Bee Lodges located around Fota Island and the work of the IBCP will see increasing numbers of lodges throughout Ireland as the project develops – keep an eye out for them!
